Binance's proof of reserves: what it does not prove
The Proof of Reserves page is open without login: BTC at 100.16%, USDT at 102.91%, and a downloadable address list you can count yourself. But it is a snapshot, and it says nothing about whether those coins are encumbered.
"Could the exchange collapse" stopped being a paranoid question in 2022. Binance's answer to it is called Proof of Reserves, and the page states it plainly: verify that all Binance account balances are fully backed at a 1:1 ratio.
You do not need to log in to read it. Most newcomers do not know it exists, and a fair share of those who do treat it as an insurance policy.
Two separate things: what it gives you, and what it cannot.
What is on the page

Opened on 9 September 2026, the three lines at the top read:
- Audit Time 01/09/26 00:00:00 UTC | BTC Block Height 964957
- Verification Mechanism zk-SNARKs
- Merkle Root Hash 126c4cc5…36be53d
Below that, a ratio card per asset:
| Asset | Reserve ratio |
|---|---|
| BTC | 100.16% |
| ETH | 100.00% |
| USDT | 102.91% |
| BNB | 100.51% |
The ratio is onchain wallet balance divided by net account balances. Above 100% means slightly more sits on chain than users hold on their books.
Take BTC. The page gives two figures: net account balances of 682,355.564 and an onchain wallet balance of 683,448.518. Divide them and you get that 100.16%. For USDT the pair is 32,307,931,896.869 against 33,247,795,618.395 — roughly 940 million more on chain than on the books.
The onchain figure splits further into exchange wallets and third-party custody: of that 683,448.518 BTC, 9,771.711 sits with third-party custody.
What it genuinely proves
That at one point in time, those addresses held those coins. There is a "Download All Address" button. Take the list, go to a block explorer, and count the balances yourself. You are not being asked to trust the number; you are being handed the means to check it.
That your balance was counted in the liability total. This is what the Merkle tree and zk-SNARKs are for. The exchange folds every user balance into a tree and publishes the root hash; once logged in, you can verify your own balance is inside that tree without anyone's balance being exposed. Understating user liabilities to flatter the ratio would show up.
What it does not prove
This is the part worth remembering.
It is a snapshot, not a live feed. The audit time reads 01/09/26 00:00:00 UTC, pinned to one Bitcoin block height. What happened after that moment is not in this page, and you have no window into the stretch before the next snapshot.
It does not cover everything. The page lists specific assets. If what you hold is not on that list, this attestation says nothing about it.
The critical one: it does not prove those coins are unencumbered. Proof of reserves answers "how much is on chain" and "how much is owed to users". It does not answer "who else is owed, and how much". Off-chain borrowings, pledges and related-party debt sit outside this table entirely.
It is not a third-party financial audit. These are figures the exchange publishes and outsiders can verify — not an audit opinion from an accounting firm. Different instruments.
How to actually use it
Read it as a signal, not a guarantee. A platform willing to publish addresses and a root hash and let you count for yourself beats one that publishes nothing. That is a point in its favour. A point is not a promise.
Keep your own trail. If you care, save the downloaded address file and compare it against the next snapshot. The trend across snapshots tells you more than any single reading.
Do not stretch the conclusion. 100.16% today says nothing about tomorrow, and nothing at all about the failure modes that have no relation to reserves: regulatory restrictions, suspended withdrawals, service withdrawn from your region.
As for how much to leave on an exchange, that is your own call. The only general thing worth saying: no single platform is a good place to keep everything you own, long term — and that holds regardless of which platform it is.
